Cast: Colin Firth, Jennifer Ehle, Simon Langton Cast: Jane Austen
The best book-to-screen adaptation ever. Helped most probably by using the mini-series format which allows for greater than two hours of screen time, but this way none of the storylines went awry.
Cast: Gillian Anderson, Patrick Kennedy, Carey Mulligan, Nathaniel Parker, Gillian Anderson
An unbelievable adaptation that conveys all the frustration caused by Chancery and keeps the storyline manageable. Gillian Anderson struck a perfect chord as the unhappy Lady Dedlock and Anna Maxwell Martin gave depth to too-good Esther Summerson.
Cast: Rupert Everett, Julianne Moore, Jeremy Northam, Cate Blanchett, Minnie Driver
My favorite Oscar Wilde play brilliantly brought to life by a wonderful cast. This is far superior to the adaptation of "The Importance of Being Earnest" which, with a great performance by Dame Judi, was a bit too "far out" as regards adaptation.
Cast: Amanda Root, Ciarán Hinds, Susan Fleetwood, Simon Russell Beale, David Collings
Why can't Ciaran Hinds write me a love letter?
Cast: Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, James Fleet
Although the plot and characters were shuffled a bit, the best part of this DVD is Emma Thompson's commentary (oh, and the acting was good, too).
Cast: Ruth Wilson, Toby Stephens, Francesca Annis, Christina Cole, Pam Ferris
This adaptation does skip over some of Jane's childhood but gets right to the meat of the story - Jane's relationship with Rochester.
Cast: Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Eva Green, Mads Mikkelsen, Giancarlo Giannini
I think this was the best update from 1950s/60s baccarat to poker ever. They even kept the torture scene.
